An African king had to do battle with Isa Bere, a dragon who dwelled in the mountain region of Futa Jallon. A drought had dried up the land and all the vegetation so the villagers went to their king complaining about the dragon who dwelled in the mountain. They claimed it was he who had drank all the water and caused the Niger river to go dry. After the desperate pleas from his starving people, he chose Tarafe, a bard, to go on this journey with him. After 8 long years of battling with Isa Bere, a long sword piercing the heart, dealt the final blow which felled the dragon and released the waters of Niger.
